After watching a typical Canadian movie ("bon cop, bad cop") in the amphitheater of Lycee Claudel, we left
to Edelweiss standing in Gatineau region within 30 minutes of the Nation's Capital and enjoyed the tranquility of being in
the nature. Possibly the most beloved activity by kids acquainted with
the ways of winter and snow is sliding. Our
friends from Ottawa presented us a new activity: the snow tubing. Tubing on snow is a wintertime activity that is similar to sledding
where an individual rides on top of an inner tube. The tubes themselves are also known as "donuts" or "biscuits" due to their
shape. We spend the entire day sliding under the sun. Tubing was such a blast for all of us. We know that tomorrow we will visit the Parlement in Ottawa and we will
go skiing at night.

We were all exited by today’s program. We had the chance to visit the well known
university of Mc Gill, Montreal. The tour was organized by old Lila students Lucie, Jehane and Juliette. With some 300 buildings, more than 36,000 students, 215,000 living alumni and a reputation
for excellence that reaches around the globe, McGill has carved out a spot among the world's great universities. This visit gave to
our 10th the opportunity to discover an international university and have a solid understanding of it and its surroundings. They showed us all the different buildings, the dorms
and explained us the school philosophy.
It was a real pleasure to
see this international environment. After visiting the campus, we proceeded to an orienteering race in Montreal to discover the city. It provided us the suspense and excitement of a treasure
hunt. The object of orienteering is to locate Montreal points of interest by using a map. We came back at Claudel at about 6.30 pm. We can not wait to experiment another exiting day in Ottawa
tomorrow.....tubing....

After a first night in our
“families”, we met at the Lycee Claudel (8.40 am) and departed to the Canadian museum of civilization. We were divided into 5 groups and could follow the explanations of a professional guide
regarding the history of Canada. The Canada Hall has been developed in two sections. The first focuses on the Atlantic
region, Quebec and Ontario from A.D. 1000 to 1885. The second covers Western and Northern Canada from 1885 to the present. We discovered the different civilizations of the country. Divided into
four zones, the First Peoples Hall is an imposing exhibition space that highlights the cultural, historical and artistic achievements of Canada's First Peoples. We finished with a nice
explanation about the Artic Ocean first expedition.
It was time to relax and enjoy the IMAX movie about the rocky mountain Express, retracing the original route
aboard the majestic steam engine. We were transported back to the age of steam to re-live this alpine nation-building odyssey. The region is just of stunning natural beauty. We discovered some of
the most beautiful landscapes on earth and the heroic human drama and epic engineering that shaped a continent.
After having lunch we went to the Rideau Canal Skate way, world’s largest skating rink. It looked easy by
watching the people from Ottawa on the ice. It was harder once we were on the ice! We enjoyed this great ride. Our students skated through the heart of downtown Ottawa on the Rideau Canal, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Skate way was 6 kilometers long, and begins just steps from Canada’s Parliament Buildings. The
scenic skating rink extends to Dows Lake. In between, we stopped several times for warm up at rest areas where there are toasty fires, hot
drinks, tasty snacks or "beaver tails" delicious pastries formed like
a beaver's tail for those searching for a great sugar rush.
Tomorrow will be an exiting program. We will visit Montreal and its famous university of Mc Guill and
meet some old friends from LILA.

First day in Ottawa,
Canada
We arrived in Ottawa today, Monday January
30th after an unscheduled landing in Denver. The airlines provided us with hotel accommodations and meal. We spent the night in Chicago and students were kind of exited. They were
safe, in a good spirit and they adapted to this unexpected situation. We arrived in a beautiful city covered by the snow and had the chance to experiment a city tour before discovering the
Lycee.
We could not wait to arrive at
Lycee Claudel, Ottawa and know the students we have been interacting with. All the 10th graders students of Lycee Claudel welcomed us at the school with cheering and thunderous
applauses. The students organized a friendly meeting on the soccer
field so that we could know each other before stories by a professional storyteller of the Canadian culture. We had a taste of some typical Canadian food before our families took us
home. « Tire sur la neige » (sugar on snow) is a confection made
by boiling maple sap past the point where it would form maple syrup but not so long that it becomes maple butter or maple sugar. It is part of traditional culture in Quebec,
Eastern Ontario and northern New England. In these regions, it is poured
onto the snow and then lifted either with a small wooden stick. We
all deserved a good rest and we will have a busy day tomorrow that we will start with the departure to the Canadian museum of civilization. After the museum, we will go ice-skating on the world's largest skating rink, through the
heart of downtown Ottawa, the Rideau Canal for a few miles in the center of Ottawa. It will be a “premiere” for some of us.

Our High school basketball team lost their opening game by 12 points at HOLA CENTER. “Our group played
well but still need games to come together as a team. We were not aggressive enough. We could feel some players did not play at their real potential. It is totally understandable. We will do
better next week.” said Coach Marilyn. That is exactly what they did: everyone fought hard during the second game, especially Dakota who has been playing really well this season. This team spirit
allowed us to win by 12 points last Friday. Boys High school next game will be held at Lafayette Park this coming Friday, January 27th 2012 at 7.00 pm. Boys and Girls elementary
basketball will start the competition when they will be back from France at Hazard recreation center. Los Feliz and Pasadena will have 2 teams registered in that competition. Our two Girls volleyball team will be back in the game this coming week end, with our U15 group playing on Saturday,
and our U18 group playing on Sunday. Both teams will be coach
ed by Caroline. After a good week of practice, we hope to have more room to play and be able to win at least a game. Our girls High school
basketball team will be playing this coming Wednesday January 25th 2012 at Hazard Recreation Center at 6.30 pm. Our soccer team 12-15 keeps
on practicing and will have its first scrimmage soon. We also would like to congratulate the West Valley players and coaches for their soccer program. After being successful during the fall
season, we now have 36 players registered in the YMCA spring season with coach Myriam and Anne. Go Lions!
